Newcastle broadcaster, actor, author and illustrator Alfie Joey has been announced as the special guest judge for Strictly St Cuthbert’s 2023, St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s charity dance competition.

The charity competition first launched in 2016 and has helped to raise thousands of pounds for people who need Hospice care in County Durham. The glittering show will return in 2023 after a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Alfie Joey will act as a special guest judge on the night alongside dance teachers Lee Dudman of Dudman Academy of Performing Arts & Fitness and Ann Haining of Applegarth Academy of Dance, with TV Presenter Anthony Rutherford acting as host for the evening.

Organisers of the event are on the search for ‘aspiring ballroom dancers’ to take to the dancefloor. 10 couples will have the opportunity to receive ten weeks of free dance tuition and get the chance to strut their stuff in front of the judges in a live performance.

The dance lessons are provided by Applegarth Academy of Dance in West Cornforth, Durham and Dudman Academy of Performing Arts and Fitness in Fenham, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and begin on 8th January. The dance schools have offered their time and expertise free of charge to the charity, to allow as much money as possible raised from the event to benefit St Cuthbert’s Hospice.

The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ style grand finale takes place on Saturday 25th March 2023 at The Fed, Gateshead, performing for friends and family in a bid to be crowned ‘Strictly St Cuthbert’s Winners’.

Jade McArdle, St Cuthbert’s Hospice Community and Events Manager said: “We’re searching for people who would love to learn to dance, all for a good cause! Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, you’ll love learning new steps with support from the talented teachers at the dance schools and coming up with a routine to perform in our glitter-filled finale!”

“In the past we’ve had couples performing dramatic Paso Doble routines and beautiful ballroom numbers. As well as some excellent comedy couples gracing the dancefloor, dressing up as their favourite Disney characters and having a proper laugh.”

“The money raised from the event will help St Cuthbert’s Hospice continue to provide free care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses, people approaching the end of life and people that are bereaved, so why not dust off your dance shoes and give it a go?”
