The chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr John Robinson, has given his backing to St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s 2014 Light Up a Life Campaign.
This year’s Yuletide remembrance celebration for people who have died will be held at Durham Cathedral at 7pm on December 14th, Cllr John Robinson and his wife, Chairman’s Consort, Maxine will join hundreds at the poignant event.
Cllr Robinson said: “I will be attending this incredibly moving service with my wife, Maxine. The festive period can be incredibly tough for people who are grieving. This event where many people come together to remember their loved ones does real good in the community while at the same time raising vital funds for what is a very good cause in St Cuthbert’s Hospice.”
St Cuthbert’s Hospice Family Support Team Manager and counsellor Julie Wells said: “I think any public holiday where you believe the rest of the world is having a fabulous time, is difficult. Christmas is the most difficult time because you just can’t escape from it, from November onwards.
Julie said the Light Up a Life campaign, now a cherished part of the County Durham Christmas time calendar serves a real need.
And she added: “People are feeling isolated at Christmas and it is no surprise that they want to gather with others who have suffered similar loss. People who are grieving will feel a fellowship, they will feel less isolated. This campaign has real psychological benefits. People do feel comforted. The atmosphere in the cathedral provides the designer cheap and a space for reflection and perhaps to feel a little stronger.”
Light up a Life is one of St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s biggest annual campaigns, and is mirrored by many other hospices across the UK. The hospice annually invites the community to remember a loved one by donating to St Cuthbert’s Hospice. All names are entered into the Light up a Life book of remembrance which is dedicated at the special Durham Cathedral service.
