After a two week competition run by St Cuthbert’s Hospice to find a name for its new 5k paint event, a winner has been found.

Students at Durham High School for Girls submitted “Colourama”, as the name for the hospice’s major summer fundraising event and judges at the hospice, who received a total of 91 entries for their competition have named it as the winner.

Sheela Joy, Senior Community & Events Fundraiser, said: “ The standard of entries for the competition was extremely high but we felt that “Colourama” was catchy, memorable, unique and best captured what the day would be like.”

The event will be staged at Aykley Heads, Durham on 6th June, this year.

And Sheela explained: “We’re moving on from Midnight Walk so that everyone can take part in our main summer sponsored event.”

Colourama would see men as well as women and children of all ages take on a five kilometre route. Each participant would start out with a pristine, white St Cuthbert’s Hospice T-shirt. At every kilometre, they would pass through a ‘paint station’ where natural, washable non-toxic powder paint is thrown. By the end, everyone would be covered in colours.

Sheela said: “There’s something about throwing colour that is just great fun. And there’s likely to be a lot more paint throwing once they’re through the course and into the party area, where we will have live music, fun fair and trade stalls.”

Linda Ibbott, Assistant Head at Durham High School for Girls said: “The girls are very proud to have come up with the name for the new paint event run by St Cuthbert’s Hospice. Colourama just seems to fit the bill perfectly and we’re delighted the team at the hospice think so too.”

“It was a group effort and we were keen to enter it into the competition.”

And she added: “It’s great that the girls are able to see their effort turned into a professionally designed logo and know that they have done something really worthwhile for their local community.”
