St Cuthbert’s Hospice are ‘branching out’ and extending its Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme to new postcodes in County Durham for 2024! The charity based in Durham, launched the environmentally friendly service in 2021 and their last collection saw them recycle over 500 real trees from across the region and raise over £6,000 to support local families who need care and support.

Community & Events Manager Jade McArdle said: “We are so excited to be running our recycling scheme again this Christmas and extending our collection areas to new postcodes! As a charity we promote sustainability and environmentally friendly practices in all areas of the Hospice from our charity shops to the produce we grow to use in our kitchens. To be able to extend this to the wider community and help them to be greener in their choices is great. The icing on the cake is that by signing up to the scheme people will also be helping us to provide vital care for the families who need us.”

“We are hoping for another bumper year with many local people getting behind the scheme and telling their friends and families to join in too.”

The charity must raise more than £2 million each year to continue providing care to people with life-limiting illnesses, those approaching the end-of-life and the bereaved. The Hospice also provide a Dementia Care Service and Community Outreach Project in the local area.

In return for a suggested £10 donation, collections can be booked in postcodes DH1, DH2, DH3, DH4, DH5, DH6, DH7, DH8, DH9, DL15, DL16, SR7 and SR8. The trees will be picked up by a team of volunteers from 8th and 28th January 2024. They can be collected from homes, churches, businesses, and schools.

Jade added: “The collection service could not run without the many volunteers who sign up to help out. There’s always room for more and we would love to hear from you if you would like to join us too. It is a great work out collecting all the trees so it could kick start your healthy habits in January if you join us and you would definitely get your name on the good list with Santa too.”

St Cuthbert’s Hospice Christmas Tree Collection is supported by many local businesses: Hilltop Durham Vehicle Hire, Poplar Tree Garden Centre, HW Martin, Charleton Chips, Tilbury Douglas, MGL Demolition, Dawson Hire and Enterprise.

Volunteers from local organisations across the County will be helping collect the Trees in January including volunteers from Azets UK, Believe Housing, Handelsbanken, Radisson Blu, Tilbury Douglas, SAGE and Swinburne Madisson.
